kidlit :: Horatio Squeak :: Karen Foxlee & Evie Barrow

July 26, 2019

Horatio Squeak is a very sweet story about a tiny mouse who is invited on to a party with some kittens and discovers that despite being small he can also be brave and use his voice to help others.

In a very fine house, on a very grand street
Lived the tiniest mouse you could possibly meet
His little green coat was threadbare and patched
If you looked very close, his socks were mismatched.

So, you might not believe that a mouseling so weak
Could possibly perform an incredible feat,
But this is the tale of HORATIO SQUEAK

We really enjoyed reading this one! The story is really lovely and the rhyming lines were so nice to read out aloud. I loved that the story takes a situation children are familiar with - going to a party and playing with friends - and makes it fun with the sweet animals, but also teaches a lesson about standing up for other people even if you don't feel like you're very brave.

I absolutely adored the illustrations in this book - I think Evie Barrow's style is delightful! There are so many tiny, perfect details and they are the kinds of images where every time you look you see something more to love. Like in the picture above - just when I thought his mismatched socks were the cutest I noticed the tiny patches on his elbows! so perfect!

I think Horatio Squeak is a perfect book to share with children in their first few years of school - especially if your little one feels a bit nervous about new adventures.
