Sunday Stack :: Recs for a Friend
September 22, 2019
Recently a lovely friend of mine was in a bit of a reading slump and asked if I could recommend some books I thought she'd like. While our reading tastes don't exactly align there is a significant crossover, and it was quite fun to pull a mini stack from my shelves for her to chose from.
I was looking for contemporary or historical fiction - no speculative fiction - with great characters but also plot driven story, and preferably on the darkish side.
And here's the stack I came up with.
I haven't read all of these, but was pretty confident they would hit the mark.
Click on the titles to go to the Goodreads page and find out more.
Where the Crawdads Sing - Delia Owens
Gingerbread - Helen Oyeyemi
The Doll Factory - Elizabeth MacNeal
The Yellow House - Emily O'Grady
(I loved this one - we read it for book club last year. You can see my review here)
Once Upon a River - Diane Setterfield
(I can't believe I never review this! I read it on our holiday over Christmas and enjoyed it very much! I'm adding it to my review list!)
The Ex - Nicola Moriarty
In case you're curious to know, she chose The Yellow House and it was a hit =)

Gingerbread and The Doll Factory were both sent to me for free by the lovely team at Pan Macmillan Australia. The others I either bought myself or was given by friends.

I absolutely love that your friends come to you for book recommendations.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any in that stack, but gosh that is a pretty picture!
I hope your friend enjoys the reads, Bron!

The Doll Factory fits the bill perfectly! And agreed about The Yellow House - I still think about that book.
