kidlit :: The Gruffalo's Child :: Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler

October 04, 2019

I was a relative late-comer to Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's The Gruffalo, only picking it up at home after A already knew it very well from childcare. We were both delighted to find a copy of the second book - The Gruffalo's Child - in our letterbox from the lovely people at Pan Macmillan Australia last month.

The Gruffalo said that no gruffalo should
Ever set foot in the deep dark wood.

But one wild and windy night the Gruffalo's child disobeys her father's warnings and ventures out into the snow. After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn't really exist … does he?

This gorgeous special edition has been released to celebrate the 15th anniversary of it's release, and includes a dust jacket that can be used as a snowy play scene and press out characters you can use to act out the story (they are so cute!).
There are also some extra features in the back of the book, including a song, a quiz, and some tips for ways to play with the scene and characters. I loved reading a bit from the author and illustrator about how they went about creating the book.

I had never read The Gruffalo's Child before we received this copy, and it is honestly such a delight. The rhyming text is absolutely gorgeous to read outloud - it is probably one of my favourites. The illustrations are beautiful, and I loved the story, especially the clever (tricky!) mouse.

Amelia's favourite page in the book was when the mouse plays a trick on the little Gruffalo - she says: "I liked when the Gruffalo's child was scared"

This one has obviously been a total hit here at our place, and I'm looking forward to reading it again many times.
